What Is the eTA

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry document for travelers from visa-exempt countries who fly to or transit through Canada.

It is electronically linked to your passport—no paper required—and remains valid for up to five years or until your passport expires.

With a valid eTA, you can visit Canada multiple times, typically for up to six months per stay.
Note: The eTA does not guarantee entry; final admission is determined by a Canada Border Services Agency officer at arrival.

What Is the eTA

Who Needs an eTA — and Who Doesn’t

You need an eTA if

  • You are from a visa-exempt country (e.g., most EU states, Australia, Japan, South Korea, etc.).
  • You are flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport.
  • You are a U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder) traveling by air.
  • You qualify under expanded eTA eligibility defined in Canada’s immigration regulations R7.01(1) & (2).

Expanded eTA eligibility (R7.01(1) & (2))

Certain foreign nationals—normally visa-required—may apply for an eTA if travelling to Canada by air and one of the following applies:

  • They have held a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) within the past 10 years, or
  • They hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa (NIV).

This expansion allows eligible travelers with proven travel history or U.S. visa status to enter Canada more easily for short stays.

You do not need an eTA if

  • You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (travel using your Canadian passport or PR card).
  • You are a U.S. citizen (enter with a valid U.S. passport).
  • You arrive by land or sea (car, train, bus, cruise ship).
